Don L Halcomb, 74, of Washington, passed away at 10:20 a.m. Saturday, June 2, 2012 at Washington Christian Village after a courageous battle with cancer. Our family would like to extend our deepest appreciation to the caring individuals at Washington Christian Village for taking care of our Father in the last stages of his illness. He was born October 4, 1937, the son and only child of Stephen Lee and Laina Maria Kasenan Halcomb in Macomb, IL. Don grew up in the country near Brooklyn, and graduated from Rushville High School. Don served his country in the United States Air Force in the Philippines & surrounding regions. Upon return to the States, he began his career at Caterpillar as an electrician, working in East Peoria but also at Mossville for the majority of his 30 years of service. Don always spoke proudly of the many electricians he trained before there was an apprentice program, stressing the importance of their personal safety. In the 60's, Don raced Enduros, typically English Greeves motorcycles that he would build in the basement, but also Triumphs and others. Don was a sponsored rider by Underwood Cycles in East Peoria, as well as one of the bike mechanics. Don loved riding dirt bikes, challenging hill climbs, and annually was one of the fans attending motorcycle races at the Peoria Motorcycle Club. He also enjoyed shooting trap, and making his own shotgun shells. His Mother, and his Father who passed when Don was only 3 years of age preceded him in death. Although we mourn today, we rejoice that they are now reunited. Surviving include his son, David Lee Halcomb of Peoria; daughter, Diana Marie Lake of Peoria; granddaughter, Amanda and grandson, Christopher, as well as 4 great grandchildren. Cremation rites will be accorded. At Don's request, no services will be held. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or a cause of the donor's choice.
