James Richard Mullen, 76, passed away on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at Lutheran Hillside Village in Peoria. He was born James Richard Butterfield on December 8, 1936 to Verna (Howard) Mullen and Adrienne (Bernadine) Butterfield and was later adopted by his stepfather, Howard Mullen. His parents and his cousin Sidney Fluegel, who was like a brother to him, preceded him in death. Jim married Karen Crowder of Peoria Heights, IL on June 1, 1968. She survives along with their three children-Sally (Ed) Foster of Washington, IL, Suzanne Mullen of Peoria, IL, and James H. Mullen of Marquette Heights, IL. Also surviving are their grandchildren-Marissa, Edward, Elizabeth, James Lee, Mikalah, Ethan, and Noah. His sister, Ann (Larry) Butcher and nephew, Chris (Jessica) Butcher. Jim was a graduate of Macomb High School and attended Western Illinois University in Macomb, IL. He then served in the United States Navy as an Aviation Electronics Technician Petty Officer Second Class, last stationed at Point Mugu in CA. Jim spent most of his career at OSF Medical Center in Peoria, IL in various lead positions in the Radiology Department. When he retired in 1991, he was Director of the Mobile MRI Unit. Jim was a highly intelligent man and loved technology and electronics. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He will be missed. Cremation rites have been accorded with a Memorial Service scheduled for noon on Tuesday, June 4th at Peoria Heights Congregational Church with Rev. Karl Kraemer officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to his service. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name may be given to any charity of the donor's choice.
