James D. Soddy, 82, of Peoria passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at OSF Richard Owens Hospice Home in Peoria. Jim was born on December 25, 1932 in Berwyn, IL the son of William C. and Ann Sarah, Darling Soddy. He married Barbara M. Decarreau on November 18,1952 in Colorado Spring, CO. Surviving are his wife, and one daughter Sandra (Michael) Beneventi all of Peoria. Three grandchildren Eric Beneventi, Kelly (Frank) Schapmire, and Michelle Soddy. Three great grandchildren Harlen, Meira and Joey as well as one nephew Pat Soddy of Colorado also survive him. His parents, one son Ray A. Soddy, one brother and two sisters preceded him in death. Jim was an honorably discharged U.S. Veteran serving in the U.S. Marines for two years and later for the U.S. Air Force for four years. He worked for Caterpillar Tractor Co. for 36 years last working at the Mossville plant. He was a long time a Boy Scout Leader for Troop 28 in Peoria Heights. After retirement, Jim volunteered his time for the American Red Cross Disaster Service, Peoria Chapter something he thoroughly enjoyed. A member of the Morton Woodcarving club, he was an avid woodcarver, carving a collection of Santa Clause's, birds among other carvings. Jim was a lover of all animals. His joy was feeding all the neighborhood dogs, treats. Cremation rites have been accorded. A celebration of his life will be at a later date. Memorials in his name may be given to TAPS.
