Karen Susan Thompson, 81, of Eureka, IL, formerly of Freeland, MI, passed away on Monday, May 12, 2025, at Carle Health Methodist Hospital in Peoria, IL.
Karen was born on November 26, 1943, in Bay City, MI, the daughter of Donald R. and Florence M. Lossing Young. In December of 1962, Karen married Terry Thompson, and together the young couple built a family and a home. Though their paths eventually diverged, this union blessed them with three much-loved, successful, children: Terri (Leo) Thompson-Burgers, Kelly (Jim) Kenar, and Jason (Yamida Lopez) Thompson.
Among those who carry on her legacy are nine cherished grandchildren: Aleshka, Kyla, Emmelien, Gaby, Adrienne, Bailey, Chiara, Ryan, and Nicole, as well as five delightful great-grandchildren. She is also lovingly remembered by her brother, Doug (Judy) Young. Preceding her in death were her parents, beloved sister Patricia Heffron, and brother-in-law Al Heffron, who all hold a special place in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
A passionate reader and lifelong learner, she instilled a love of reading in her children and grandchildren. Karen encouraged her children to aspire to achievement and follow their passions. Her adventurous spirit led her to travel, with cherished journeys around the US and Europe. Music was another passion; she delighted in both playing and listening, and passed her appreciation for the arts on to her children.
Karen was perceptive, embodying a blend of intelligence and quick wit. Her determination and feisty spirit made her formidable, while her sensitivity revealed a depth of understanding and compassion. Above all, she treasured her role as a mother, sister and daughter, finding the greatest joy in nurturing her loved ones.
