Joan Ibanez, 80, of Peoria, IL, passed away the afternoon of Sunday, May 3, 2020, comfortably at her home, surrounded by the love and care of her daughter, Lisa Hetzel.
Joan was born to John and Lucile Nicholl on September 22, 1939 in Blue Island, IL. She was a devoted wife to her late husband, Lester Ibanez, and a dedicated mother to her four children. She made a career as a secretary for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad, and later retired as a head secretary for Memorial Medical Center Foundation.
Joan was a woman of many talents and hobbies, and incredibly accomplished. She flew a plane, participated in fencing tournaments, and enjoyed race cars with her husband. She also loved the city of Chicago, and was particularly fond of its theaters and shows. She enjoyed various educational pursuits, including returning to college to study Biochemistry and Anatomy at the age of 50. She also loved to read, write, and draw. Joan will be remembered by many for her affinity for animal and human rights, her love for any crime mystery book, and her passion for M&Ms.
Joan is preceded in death by the love of her life, Lester Ibanez, both parents, John and Lucile Nicholl, and her sister, Elizabeth Green. She leaves behind her children, Lisa (Bob) Hetzel of Peoria, IL, Stephen (Yoko) Ibanez of Nashau, N.H., Viki Warner of Bellingham, and Leo Ibanez. Also surviving is her brother, Michael Johnson, seven grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.
The world lost a treasure Sunday afternoon, and Joan will be deeply missed by many.
