Obituary

John R. Harlan, 73, of Edelstein, IL, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, December 14, 2022. He was born on February 27, 1949, in Peoria, the son of John "Elwood" and Ruby Kellington Harlan.

John married Sidney M. Frisby on November 8, 1969, in Wyoming, IL.

Surviving are his wife, one son Jeffrey Harlan of Overland Park, KS; one daughter Sara (Ed) Counsil of Dunlap, IL; Four Grandchildren, Eddie, Zoie, Sierra, and Elwood. Also surviving are two sisters Carolyn Schelkopf of Elmwood, IL and Judy (Luis) Cabrera of Elgin, IL.

He proudly served his country with the U.S. Army as part of the Old Guard at Fort Meyer, in Arlington VA before being honorably discharged in 1971. He worked as a supervisor at Caterpillar Tractor Company for 34 years retiring in 2002.

He was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church in Dunlap and the Dunlap American Legion Post 1078, where he served as a past commander.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service is scheduled for 2:00 PM Tuesday December 27, 2022  at Prospect United Methodist Church. Pastor Linda Vonck will officate. Visitation will be one hour before his service also at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name may be given to Freedom Paws Service Dogs Foundation in Chillicothe, IL.
